Well, is there at least a way to have a toolbar item not have a label string, AND not have the little extra space bellow it if the person chooses to have labels anyways.

Also, would it be advisable/possible to subclass nstoolbar to do the always showing thing on the right. Just thinking about it makes me think it would be pretty hard or near impossible without losing much of NSToolbar's functionality.

Nope, there is no API for this. You should file an enhancement request though, since it makes sense.

Incidentally, I don't think Safari uses the NSToolbar... there is no Customize popup, no drag and drop of the items, and it has a different UI for handling customization.
