NSToolbarItem tag

For some reason, whenever I set a toolbar item's view to an NSView object, it automatically makes the tag return -1 (I'm assuming this is it's way of telling something is wrong). I checked and NSView conforms to NSCoding, so I don't see what can be wrong.
