the most successful pattern finders i think, that i know of, are called
compressors. as in gzip / lzw etc. compression algorithms do exactly
that - find patterns. the better they can find patterns the better they
can compress. i've just bought a book called 'text compression' by
bell, cleary and whitten and is generally reckoned to be pretty good.
