Emulating NSColorPanel window behaviors

I'm trying to create a panel like NSColorPanel that should have a sharedColorPanel-like class method to return a single instance. I'm still really new to Cocoa and I don't understand all of the Nib concepts yet. I'm having trouble getting a panel like the NSColorPanel to show up. How do you create a standalone panel like this and return it from a sharedXXXPanel method?
