To my ear, "WTF" is no more offensive than "darn" or "shoot". All
three of them allude to real "bad words", but are 1 level removed. We
all know what words are being insinuated via "darn" or "shoot", but for
some reason no one seems to find those offensive. Now, had he actually
spelled out the constituent words of that acronym, I too would have
been offended--but he didn't.

Actually, I meant it to be a little humorous, and wouldn't have said it if I thought it the least bit offensive; but oh well: he must have been having a stressful day. :-) Personally, I do not have a habit of swearing, and I have never used any "bad language" on this list. It's just like RTFM - lots of people will use the acronym, but few would ever think of actually using the "main" word in its entirety.

Anyway, many thanks to Mr. Riley for the helpful response. If I have any further questions, I will post to the darwin-development list as you suggested.

Robert Burns
