Getting User defined network interface names

  • Subject: Getting User defined network interface names

Does anyone know how to get the name of the network interfaces as they
appear in System Preferences? I can find the info in
/var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml, but it seems to be a lot of
work and memory use to read in that whole file and dig through for a couple
of snippets of information - I was wondering if there was a simple method of
obtaining "built in ethernet" from "en0" or something similar.

Cheers,

JT
