Thank you so much to everyone who replied.

I did sudo fix Precomps as several people suggested. This removed the warning messages about the precompiled header date mismatches, but the internal bus error remained. I did a repair permissions with Disk Utility and then this error also disappeared. It seems there were quite a large number of permissions errors. I see repairing permissions mentioned a lot in various news groups etc. What causes permissions for a file to change? The contents of the files don't change spontaneously, so why do the permissions?
