character spacing

I would like two chars in my textview to be "padded", or to be spaced a little further apart from their surrounding chars (left and right-wise). Is there a way to do this by specifying some sort of character spacing attribute? I could do it by simply adding a space on both sides of the char, but that would bring up some problems later that I would rather not deal with. basically I would like to adjust the kerning on two specific characters, does anyone know how to go about doing this?
