Licensing and cost. FrontBase is nice, but not cheap. OpenBase is the
same, nice but not cheap.
I really like both OpenBase and FrontBase in addition, but for many
project, Postgres fits the need better.
Not too mention, iffy installers like Daylite's that have issues when
OpenBase is already installed tend to leave a bad taste in the mouth as
well.

This is the crux of the problem, IMHO. If you look at direct
dependencies, then your program is not linked to and does not derive
from the GPL source. However, if you remove the GPL object code from
the system, your program will no longer work.
Yet another reason an object-relational mapping framework (or other
abstraction layer) like the Enterprise Objects Framework is useful.
(Why is everyone focused on MySQL and PostgreSQL anyway? There are
other great databases out there, like FrontBase...)
