(Why is everyone focused on MySQL and PostgreSQL anyway? There are other great databases out there, like FrontBase...)
Cost, portability to other platforms, source availability, documentation. In this latter arena, I get the following number of hits searching category "Books" at Amazon for the indicated keyword:
2 for "OpenBase"
7 for "FrontBase"
110 for "PostgreSQL"
399 for "MySQL"
I would say that data fairly reflects the relative number of times these names come up in a list discussion.

And if we search for some other terms:

6358 results for apple macintosh
14217 results for microsoft windows

31 results for "objective-c" cocoa
71458 results for .net

As for the other issues:

MySQL may well cost you money, depending on how you want use it.
OpenBase and FrontBase both run on Windows, Solaris and Linux, which I think covers most people's platform requirements.
I have yet to see a convincing case for the desirability of source code for the average developer-user of a database. If you notice buggy behaviour in the core MySQL server, are *you* really going to fix it?

This is not to claim that either FrontBase or OpenBase will be a better solution for everybody, but rather that anyone wanting to entrust important data to a repository should base their decision of which server to use on rather more than just book rankings and availability of source code.
