Duplicating Apple search field *functionality*?

OK, we've discussed how to implement the UI of Apple's search systems... now, what's the approved way to implement the functionality?

Classic Mac OS had a technology called V-Twin (later AIAT) which provided text summarization and indexing services. However, the SDK for it hasn't been updated since 1997, and I can't find anything like it in Cocoa.

Is it really the case that Cocoa, Core Foundation and the rest lack any kind of indexing and searching API? Are all the Apple applications reinventing the wheel each time?
