After 30+ years of text-based procedural programming, I'm now wrestling
with GUI-based OO programming, in the form of Cocoa, IB, and PB (not to
mention CamelBones :-).
The greatest cathartic moment I had, which occurred while writing
UnitTests(www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?UnitTest) and Smalltalk code, is that
object-oriented programming isn't gui-based. It's object-based.
I realize that "GUI-based" and "text-based" are orthogonal to "OO" and
procedural. What I was saying is that I'm making both transitions (as
well as learning about Apple's frameworks, OBjC syntax, etc. :-).
The GUI issue, for me, is twofold. Because IB and PB are GUI-based, I
can't easily look in a file to see how something was done. In fact, I
find myself creating note files of the sort I described. The other
issue is that programming GUIs involves UI design issues, event-based
programming, and a bunch of other things I'm not experienced in. It's
fun, but a bit challenging and even frustrating at times.
Thanks for the comments, however, they're thought-provoking.
