Apple has a project called mDNS Responder that should answer all of
these questions. They have versions of it for most of the major OS's,
and it is fairly simple to create a version that will do only the bare
requirements for what you are looking for. There is some documentation
at:

Safari is now able to list the websites of the local network via the

Is there some documentation concerning this feature? What is the
service
name format?
I use a web server != apache and having my web sites to appear in the
Rendezvous bookmarks of Safari would be great.
