I guess I can speak as a representative of the 'new generation of
programmers', being thirteen. I did learn C and a bit of C++ first, and
can't imagine trying to program in Objective-C/Cocoa without that knowledge.
There probably are a larger portion of the 'new generation' that didn't, but
I think they'll just shoot themselves in the foot and go to Java, or their
questions will (eventually) get unanswered on this list.

(I can't talk about Java as I've never used it.)
