[Semi-OT] dmg and iApps

I have a question regarding the Disk Images.

I just downloaded iSync and iCal which are provided in a .dmg format.

When I double-clicked on the iCal.pkg.dmg file. Instead of having a volume mounted on my desktop, I got a file in the Volume the dmg was in as if the dmg was just a compressed archive.

Is this a new feature of dmg and how can you get it? Might be interesting for softwares distribution.
