I just installed Safari and I noticed that the its disk image had the
same self-deletion magic built-in. Specifically,
(1) A double-click on the .dmg opened Disk Copy, which is normal.
(2) Disk Copy proceeded to mount the image. Also normal.
(3) Usually, Disk Copy quits at this point. Instead, it reported
that it was "copying files". (As it turns out, the Safari
application bundle was copied to the same spot in the filesystem
where the .dmg file was found.)
(4) DC then reported that it was unmounting the image.
(5) Finally, Disk Copy quit, having also moved the .dmg file to the
trash.
I haven't seen a "Make 'Mission: Impossible' Disk Image" menu option in
Disk Copy recently.
Does anyone know what tricks Apple's playing here?
(It's heartening to see that Apple is aware of the serious user
experience issues with .dmg files, and that they've made some major
improvements, but (as usual) the gospel is slow to make its way to the
faithful.)
