They already have a second edition out that may fix some of this.
It's called Learning "Cocoa with Objective C"
The new version of Learning Cocoa is about (by my and my editor's
estimate) an 80% rewrite of the original. Pretty much you can assume
that I used the original material (which I did not author) and used it
as research and a springboard. Most of the example programs are
new--and even the paragraphs that I brought forward from the old
edition were pretty heavily massaged.
Yes, the original wasn't up to par for O'Reilly books. I complained
very loudly to people at O'Reilly about it. And they listened and gave
me the chance to take a whack at redoing it. I think that we've done a
good job at it.
The reason we gave it a new title was to try to put, at least to some
degree, a bit of distance between the first edition and the second.
I'm moderately peeved that there are still copies available of Learning
Cocoa (1st edition) out there in the world. In fact, at MacWorld, there
was a retailer selling the first edition. Please, if you are
considering buying any book at this level, please please please make
sure that you don't get the first edition. Of course, I'd like it if
you would consider my rewrite of the book. :) But, if you don't like my
rewrite, I'd suggest either Bill Cheeseman's or Aaron Hillegaas' books.
Bill's is a bit newer so it'd be more up to date wrt details.
