Why not simply use NSToolbar?
As I was trying to allude to earlier, if they didn't know about the
HIG's recommendations for metal, they probably didn't know about
NSToolbar. I wouldn't be surprised if they have had no contact with
other engineers, and had just been told to get on with it.
One of the goals of Safari is "innovation," and that means breaking
new ground. Safari engineers are not really locked up in the
dungeons; they do know about NSToolbar. Safari does not use NSToolbar
because it needed to do things outside the scope of NSToolbar
functionality and APIs. Based on experience with how things work in
Safari, it's possible for some of the changes to migrate to NSToolbar
at some point. Similarly it's also possible for the human interface
guidelines to be updated based on experiences with use of metal in
apps...
Stupid question related to this.
Can the migration also be done for the NSMenu based of the Address Book
experience?
The Address Book in 10.2 is making use of Small Font pop-up (or
contextual) menus. Currently, it looks like there's no (easy?) way to
do this when you're not playing with a NSPopupButton widget.
