I don't have a direct answer to your question, but when I wanted to
implement IMAP support, I ended up using CamelBones
(http://camelbones.sourceforge.net/) to incorporate Perl into my
applications, and implementing the IMAP interface in Perl. It seemed
simpler and easier at the time. YMMV
