Know when file opens of other app

I searched the archives, but couldn't find the answer to this question:
is there a way for my app to know when a file of another app is opened?
I know about NSWorkspace for listening when an app launches, but I was
wondering how my app can know when a file gets opened?
Anyone have any leads?
