Hi,

nibtool from August 2002 Dev Tools was badly broken. OK, you had to go back to the previous nibtool, no problem.
Now I updated to December 2002 Dev Tools and I hoped nibtool is fixed now. But I have problems again! Not so bad like August 2002 nibtool, but still ...

Situation:
- I have two NIB files (packages), e.g. "english.nib" and "german.nib". Same structure, only localized (modified layout and translated strings).

The following works fine:
- nibtool -I german.nib -O -L english.nib > german.strings

It creates a new file "german.strings" with all the translated strings from english to german. NIBs leave unmodified. Great.

The following worked fine with earlier nibtool (before August 2002), but is broken with December 2002 nibtool:

- in "english.nib" maybe some changes took place (e.g. added a new object).
- made corrections on "german.strings" (e.g. corrected a wrong translated string).
- want to generate a new "german.nib" with structure of (eventually) modified "english.nib", layout information of previous "german.nib" and translation information from "german.strings". This I have done the following way:
- rename "german.nib" to "german~.nib" (make a "previous version" of the localization)
- nibtool -I german~.nib -O -w german.nib -d german.strings english.nib

Normally this takes all the layout information from the previous "german~.nib", takes all translated strings out of "german.strings" and translates with this information "english.nib" into a new file "german.nib".
Now this does not work: It does NOT take the strings out of "german.strings". :-(
It takes both - strings and layout - out of "german~.nib", so editing the "german.strings" has no effect.

This is bad, because I build some scripts in my project to automate translations (for various languages). I always edit the .strings files for the languages and the rest is competely done automatically. The only thing a have to do is to eventually adjust the layout for new objects. But this I only have to do one time for every added object in every language.

This is not possible with December 2002 nibtool.

Is this a known bug? Some workarounds? Some ideas?
Do I have to go back (again) to nibtool previous to August 2002 Dev Tools?

Bye,
Mani
