No, .m4a is an AAC song.
The songs downloaded from iTunes Music Store are .m4p. And you should
still be able to play them on a machine with which they have been
paired.

If a .m4a is a AAC file with some DRM in it, I tend to believe you can
wait till the end of the universe to see it work.
