On older macs (at least.. don't know on the newer ones) the serial number was recorded somewhere (boot partition probably) on the drive. If you re-partitioned it or exchanged it for a new one the serial number is gone. There was no hardware serial number.
Another reason why using this number is a bad idea.

This makes life difficult because the serial number printed on the bottom of the computer rubs off, but that's another rant...
