You'd be wrong to assume that... more accurately, most Macs have a

I believe almost all machines which can run OS X have serial numbers.
The

beige G3s. I believe it (the serial numbers in software) was started
with
the "new world" macs (rom in software). I could be wrong.

Ummm. Sorry, Ben, but you _are_ wrong. I've got 3 macs here, all
running legitimately installed copies of Jaguar (i.e. direct from the
install CD without the help of UUX or whatever the hell its called
these days), none of which have serial numbers. A beige G3, a Lombard
and a Wallstreet.
On top of all that, there are machines that are running 10.1 out there
(but not here ;-) with support from UUX that are waaaay older than the
Beige G3 - I have a friend with a 9600 upgraded with a twin G4 that
runs 10.1 quite happily, TYVM...
And then, what happens when you want to port your software to, say,
GNUstep...
Hardware ID is a bad, bad thing, IMNSHO.

(but then, what the hell do I know?)
