Possibly during install ask the user to locate said
"Killer App" on his/her hard drive, the way we used to
have to do (do we still have to, can't remember last
time I did it) with plugins for browsers. Then, when
the person gets a new version of the app and your
program fails have an error/warning come up saying
"Could not load Killer App 1.5.app, this could be
because you have acquired a newer version of Killer
App. If you believe this to be the case please select
"Locate Killer App" below, if not press "Cancel".".

Something like that, not too elegant and there's
probably a better solution, but that get's the job
done. You could during install copy the app to a
location such as your support folder or something so
after they initially locate it at install the program
won't fail after they change versions. Then in
preferences have an "update Killer App location"
preference pane or something.
