Hi all,
It's with great sadness that I admit to having all the artistic ability
of a particularly talentless damp sock. Thus, I always struggle to come
up with any half-way decent icons for my Cocoa applications. I can
usually just about manage toolbar icons, but big and beautiful app
icons
usually continue to elude me.
I'm willing to bet that this applies to quite a few of you too, and
that
like me you sometimes don't have the resources to hire a professional
icon design house to remedy the situation. In an effort to do something
about this situation, I've put together a list of resources pertaining
to OS X icon design, and have also released the few icons I've created
in the past for your use. Several other developers have followed suit
(Buzz Anderson - PodWorks, Gus Mueller - VoodooPad, Michael McCracken -
Blapp), and hopefully some of you will see fit to contribute.
There are several goodies already available at my new Developer Icons
page, here:

My own stuff is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution
license,
and the work of the others is either the same or even less restrictive.
Hopefully some of you will find a few of these trinkets useful in the
eleventh hour when a client requests yet another shiny NSToolbarItem!
On a related topic, several of us have discussed the possibility of
pooling our resources by contributing to a common fund, with a view to
hiring an icon design house to create some standard NSToolbarItem
icons,
which would then be released for use by the entire Cocoa development
community. The basic idea is to determine the most commonly required
"functions" we tend to need in our toolbars, determine what images
would
serve those functions best, and then contract an icon designer to
create
a large set of toolbar icons for everyone to use.
To facilitate some discussion of this idea, I've created a phpBB forum
on my own site, which you can find here:

Thanks for reading. :)
Cheers,
