If you know a better list, let me know.
I have installed Panther on an iBook and it worked perfectly. I then
installed Panther on a dual G4 500 and it installed and runs, but I
can't get it to connect to the network. I've tried everything. I
tried DHCP with my airport base, I tried using a manual IP address.
It sees the Airport base station, but gets back a bogus ip address.
What ever I try, I can't get it to see the network. I know the
machine physically works, because I can boot off a Jaguar install and
the networking works fine.
Anyone else seen this?
Not me. I have a dual-500 G4 running Panther, and it works fine on the
network. All hosts are behind the Airport NAT, with split
external/internal BIND, etc. I have Panther Server running on a B&W G3
500, and it is networks fine as well. There is a 9600/450 G3 running
Jaguar Server, for comparisons. Something to point out is that it
shows the fw0 interface all the time, but not on the G4. I wonder it
that's because I tried the Beta last year, and it left something in OF?
I'll see if I can figure out what may be causing your problem. Have
you checked your Airport config lately? Make sure you're not running
NAT on the Airport at the same time natd is running on your G4, which
is active when using "Share My Internet Connection". Same with DHCP.
Airport base stations supply dynamic addresses between
10.0.1.2-10.0.1.200, with 10.0.1.201-10.0.1.254 available for static
assignment. Your router settings in all hosts behind Airport NAT
should be using a router gateway of 10.0.1.1. Net mask for all is
255.255.255.0. Are you running internal BIND?
I still have problems with Jaguar and earlier, though, as they seem to
be very slow and generate a lot of packet collisions, resulting in
pauses of 400-600 ms between subsequent attempts. All use straight
cables, directly to a cheap little 8-port LinkSys 10/100 switch (is
this the culprit?), which I bought to replace the pair of heavy-duty
NetGear rackmount units with 80+ dB cooling fans screaming at me.
Frustrating as hell, because on my old systems, I could saturate the
100-base TX between a client & server 9500/200, non-stop, with a Finder
8.6 file copy over IP. Any ideas?
