Urr. Maybe I missed a vital part of the discussion, but... why? Why not
just create your NSMenu and attach it to a newly instantiated
NSStatusItem in your application controller's awakeFromNib?
I think it's NSUIElement, which you need to set to 1.
It's LSUIElement, LS for Launch Services.
