Seeking contacts and advice on finding work in programming for the Mac

Greetings all,

I'm new to these apple lists. I hope it's not inappropriate to send the same message to multiple lists. Also I hope this is not an inappropriate subject matter for a post to these lists. If either of those is the case, please accept my apologies.

I am in Australia, looking for work and opportunities to learn about how to program for Mac OS X. I've read through large portions of the ADC site, downloaded some of the tools and am slowly looking through them to see what I can learn from those.

A bit about my history... At university I studied Computer Science, learnt Pascal extensively, and a little C/C++. I didn't finish that degree because I discovered FileMaker Pro and launched myself into a career developing software in FileMaker for about the last 8 to 10 years. I'm considered by some of the big names in that industry (eg. Brian Dunning) as one of the best in the world. However, I don't have much real world experience developing software in "real" programming languages like C/C++/Java/etc. But that's where I want to go.

Ideally I would find a company that would hire me as a trainee developer or something like that. With on the job training or other help, I would quickly remind myself of what I learnt at university, and fill in any gaps that exist, and then from there rapidly improve my skills and techniques, all the while learning on the job about how specifically to use those skills for Mac software development, and with any luck, at the same time actually contributing something to that company. (If it makes any difference, money is little issue here. I don't know if I can afford to pursue this idea without any income at all, but I'm not after any huge salary or anything).

The problem is, I have no idea where to start looking for such a company... (What companies in Australia develop software for the Mac?) Nor can I find any resources that might help me find such companies or any other direction...

On the other hand, if that idea is a bad idea (maybe no one would hire someone on that basis?), what alternatives are there? I have considered going back to finish my degree, or do some other form of tertiary education (eg. TAFE course), but I wouldn't be able to start one of those till the start of next year at this point, so I want to find something useful to do in this area for the next six months at least, if not longer.

If anyone out there can help, or give me any direction I would be most grateful.

Regards,
David Thorp.
