a bit late, but to develop wit an iBook, please check this application:

This small AppleScripts enables your iBook to use a second monitor in
non-synchronized mode.An external. monitor then can be
used with as much as 1920x1440 pixels.
Furthermore, this app changes some system setting of Quartz Extrem to
enable graphics acceleration, even if less than 16Megs of video RAM
is available (use PCI Extreme!):

Using this tool, developing with an iBook is really great!
