Your examples all look to me like they should return autoreleased results.
I'm a program-by-instinct kind of guy, although I think my instincts are
pretty finely tuned.

The only downside to whatever you decide is that people have to test their
code to see what happens. I always do that anyway, and I always read the
documentation. So take your pick.
