I don't know the answer to your specific issue, but I do know that processes launched at startup time have a different Mach port context than processes launched under the Window Server. If DO is reliant on a consistent mach port context, this would explain it. (I don't remember exactly how the port context differs. It's a different port set or the bootstrap port is reset or something like that.)
