Yeah, that it worked in TextEdit made me guess that there already is some code, but I wasn't sure whether that was TextEdit's doing, or Cocoa's.

In case of uncertainty, you can take a look at the source to TextEdit in /Developer/Examples. It's not very large, and it shouldn't take long to see exactly what TextEdit does to load files. It's something that's probably useful to understand.
