BTW

One last thing: if I remove all calls to NSTimer -invalidate from my application, then the animation works perfectly, no flickering, no unexplained unsetting.

Of course, if I do that I can't ever stop the cursor animation!

But I'm really starting to think this is some kind of bug in the OS.
