Making an application active

Is there a way to make an application active (frontmost application) when its not currently?

I have an NSStatusItem connected to my application. Mainly for ease of use because I also have an option to hide the Dock icon...so I figured that would be an easy way for people to access the preferences or the application's help. My problem with that is if the application isn't currently active, and you select preferences or help from the status item, the window for it will open and all, but the application stays in the background. If the user has a big window open in the frontmost application, it isn't immediately obvious that this has happened. I figured making my application active when something is selected in the status item would be the best way to solve this, but I haven't ever tried to do that before.

Any help would be appreciated :)
