Have you ever seen a lefty writing? They put their hands in the
weirdest positions just to see what they are writing!
I'm under the impression, as the spouse of a lefty and the child of
two others, that this is primarily an anti-smudge technique rather
than a visibility thing. Sometimes you see the awkward wraparound hand
thing. Some turn the paper so the "top" edge is to the right, write
vertically and drift left as each line completes. My wife, as a child,
developed a habit of composing lines in her head and writing
backwards. Then again some just use smudge-resistant media or don't
care.
You are correct. Us leftys have to deal with a primarily righty world;
I in fact use my mouse right-handed as a matter of that's how I learned
it. The computer keyboard and mouse are the Only way in which I am
ambidextrous; for all other purposes my right hand is often quite
useless. My handedness is one reason that I far prefer typing to
writing (another is that I write far too slowly to keep up with my own
thoughts). I have never developed a writing style that prevents
smudging; when forced to write, my left hand always develops a graphite
or ink stain on its entire bottom side and slow-drying ink often smears
quite badly. I'm glad to live in a world where I'm rarely required to
write with a pen =). At least pencil graphite usually washes right off
when I have to use it rather than type. My handedness is also one of
the reasons I'm so fond of right-to-left languages such as Hebrew, or
Japanese (which can go either way in fact) :).
