SCNetworkCheckReachabilityByName and firewalls

I'm trying to test for an internet connection using
SCNetworkCheckReachabilityByName, but it doesn't seem to work when
behind a firewall, even if the proxy info is set and working. Is there
a way to have it use the proxy information?
