I am implementing (or finishing the implementation of) the maildir

Now is this going to create problems on HFS+, the default FS on OS X?
From what I know, HFS substitutes a slash whenever you request a
filename with a colon in it using one of the POSIX APIs. Similarly,
the Carbon APIs substitute a slash with a colon on UFS volumes. I
suppose the same will happen with the Cocoa APIs.
