nscell<>nstableview communication

I'm making a custom cell class which I will putting inside a nstableview. I have one question though, how does the nstableview notice that you have changed the contents of the cell? i am subclassing it off of nsactioncell, not nstextfieldcell. Does the cell throw some sort of notification or something?
