There's one more (somewhat restrictive) option that hasn't been addressed here. In FileStorm, we use a third party (well, not third party to us, but to you) service called eSellerate. It's actually an e-commerce service but provides mechanisms to integrate update checking and sales into your application. If you're going to be looking for a commerce solution anyway, you might check out www.esellerate.net, and look at the eSellerate SDK. If you're not planning on selling your software, then this probably isn't a viable solution.
