Menu actions in doc-based app

I want to add menu items to the File menu in my doc-based app, and I'm
seeing that I'll have to subclass the NSDocumentController to get the
action and validation to work properly. This feels like a big
undertaking, so if anyone has any suggestions as to an easier way to do
it, I would greatly appreciate it.
