Getting the amount of free space on a volume

Anyone know how to find out how much space is available (in bytes) on a
volume for a given path? How about the capacity? Or type of media?
The last 2 aren't too important, but I'd like to be able to display
whether the media is a DVD-RAM or a Zip disk and display the
appropriate icon.
