Hello again everyone,
Just for those who didn't catch it the first time, I'm providing a copy of
my appeal to programmers regarding tree growth simulator software put out by
the U.S. government for Windows, which could be ported to MacOS X.
If you want to participate in creating a Cocoa version of this software,
please get in touch with me and I will send you a summary of what I have
learned. I have also posted this concern to a "help wanted" forum on
SourceForge.net.

Subject: FVS and SVS
Hello everyone. I'm new to this list.
Here's the concern I bring to you today...
Non-programmer is seeking programmers who know how to port Windows
simulation/visualization software to MacOS X. Regarding the United States
Department of Agriculture - Forest Service's projects known as tree Stand
Visualization System (SVS) and Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS):
SVS -
http://forsys.cfr.washington.edu/svs.html
FVS -
http://www.fs.fed.us/fmsc/fvs/index.php
WHY? This software is currently freely available for download from Forest
Service web pages, for Windows only. It could potentially be used by
volunteers in the "VIP-Coverts" program, which is part of the USDA's Forest
Stewardship Program. The Stewardship "VIP" program provides outreach to the
private landowner. The best-case scenario is to have this software ported to
OS X so VIPs could work with foresters to graphically show good management
practices on a Mac (possibly iBooks, etc.) to inquiring owners of private
timberland. Because this involves volunteers who are small woodlot owners
themselves, it is unlikely any of the Mac users among them (quite a few)
would invest in Windows emulation software just to run a couple of pieces of
PC freeware.
THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE... because of the regional problem of private
landowners falling victim to the practice of "high grading". The FVS and SVS
programs make showing landowners the devastating impact that improper
practices such as "high grading" have on private forest lands, particularly
in Pennsylvania.
ADDED NOTES: This is a voluntary undertaking. I am not a programmer and
have no experience. I'm soliciting volunteers who do. I have confirmed that
the code for FVS, and most likely SVS, are open-source. My understanding is
that these are not large programs, at least by commercial bloatware
standards.
--------------------------
If anyone on this list is interested in learning more about this, I can post
additional information. I would appreciate it very much if you could let me
know at your earliest convenience. If this is not the case, I would
appreciate any suggestions of other places to post this concern. I posted
this message to SourceForge.net's "help wanted" forum a few days ago with no
response.
