I fully agree, Fritz: not only in some, but all cases in which the user
has setup his OS to allow the modem to dialup automatically. David's
solution is the way of detecting online-status while explicitly not
triggering a connection as is outlined in the documentation at
http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1145.html.
The situation in which it is useful is when you need to detect if you
are online with the aim of firing off actions that require you to be. I
should have added that ;)
