mouseDown event in modal loop

Is there any way of catching a mouseDown event when the receiver is "hidden" by a modal window?

In my case: during a [NSApp runModalForWindow:], I want the user to be able to rotate with the mouse a 3D (OpenGL) view contained in another window...

Any help greatly appreciated!
