Yeah, I would like to ask the Chartsmith "guys" to release the source
code for their $129 product ... but I am afraid they might hurt my

Perhaps you should see if they still have the Chartsmith Server API to
the application. In the NeXT days you could connect to CS via a
Distributed Objects model and generate charts and then get the images
back.
