Saving NSOutlineView expansion state

I've got an NSOutlineView and want to save the expansion state. I see I should implement outlineView:itemForPersistentObject and outlineView:persistentObjectForItem but I don't understand what I'm supposed to so in these routines. Any tips or examples?
