I just got this email, and have gotten permission from Buzz to post it, so here is, apparently, the definite answer to this issue from DTS. It is very similar to the solution I converged on already with the help of others on the list, and that did fix the bug, so I expect this would too.

Hi Ben,
I'm happy to report that you're in luck. I finally got desperate enough
to contact Apple Developer Tech Support and they confirmed it was a bug
and gave me a workaround. I actually posted it to my weblog for
everyone's benefit (complete with code in a PB project). You can see it
here:

Hope that helps--it seems to work great for me...

Hi! I've been surfing the cocoa-dev archives trying to find

I'm currently banging my head against the wall trying to get an
NSMovieView instance to behave. I'm using it to allow my app to play
audio files (MP3s mostly), and it is working except for one thing:
almost invariably, at some point during playback, the playhead (and the
audio) simply stop!

I am hitting exactly the same bug. Did you ever find out the cause?
Do you have a workaround? Any information you can give me would be
invaluable. Thanks!
