Apple uses Carbon's Control Manager for the file listing -- look at the Data Browser. It's documented in Tech Note 2009. That'll get you started.

Is there an easy way to mimic the look and behavior (to an extent) of a file listing in the Finder?

I want the file listing in my app to look like the list view in the finder. I already have already created a file listing in a table view, but I can't figure out how to get a column with similar info the to "Kind" column in the Finder. I also can't figure out how to have only the file name selected, instead of the full row, when you click on it.
