The Mingw version *is* a native Windows version. That's the point of
Mingw. (I was one of the people that got Mingw off the ground, for
precisely the reason that it builds *native* executables and not Cygwin
ones.)

From what I've heard, the X11 support works on Windows, so you *can*
use an X server to take advantage of the more stable GUI implementation
under X.
